Here is a full tutorial on how to sign up for an Amazon Seller account. This should be your first step, even if you don’t have anything to sell yet. You can’t use the Amazon Seller app on your phone until you complete this set up. Without an app similar to Amazon Seller, you won’t be able to scan products and get all the information you need. There are other apps that achieve this, (and some even give you more info), but the Amazon seller app is free and works great! If you don’t have it yet, you can download it here or in your phone’s app store. If you haven’t read my article on why you would want to be an Amazon seller in the first place, read my article “Intro to Retail Arbitrage“. If you are ready to sign up with Amazon, here ya go!

This tutorial is made assuming you have nothing to sell, that you’ll be initially registering as a sole proprietor (meaning you don’t yet have an officially registered business), and that you’ll be creating a new account.

If you follow this workflow, you will be signing up for a Professional Seller account. Don’t be scared about the $40 monthly fee. You’ll get your first month free and you’ll save the $1 per item charge associated with an individual account. This will also provide some motivation because if you know you’ve got a $40 fee coming next month, you’ll hurry up and get some inventory in there to cover it! Moreover, a Professional Seller account allows you to truly grow your business. As an individual seller, there is a two week hold on your funds, in addition to the two week pay period. That 3-4 weeks you will have to wait for your first payout will severely stunt the growth of your business. As a Professional Seller, you will also be able to ungate categories in order to expand the types of items you can sell on Amazon.

The easiest way to do it is to visit the Amazon home page. In the upper right portion of the screen, you’ll see a link named “your account”. From there, you’ll see a drop down menu where you will need to click on “your account”.

That will bring you to a page that looks like the one below. On the right side under “your other accounts,” you’ll need to click on “your seller account”.

That will bring you to a sign in page. You may use your seller account if you’d like. If you don’t have an account or you just want a separate account for selling, click the “Create your Amazon account” button.

If you chose to create a new account, the “Sign in” box will expand into a “Create account” box that resembles the one below. Enter the required information and click on the “Create your Amazon account” button.

On the next screen, you’ll find a page explaining a little bit about the Amazon selling program. In the middle of the page, you’ll find a large button that says, “Start your free trial.” Clicking on this button will start you on your way to beginning your one month of free Professional Sellers account. For a month, you will enjoy all the perks of a Professional Sellers account, including saving the $1 fee per item sold that the individual sellers account carries. Your mission is to be selling over 40 items by next month so that it’s free too!

The next page is simple. Enter your legal name under which you will be doing business. This can be your name or it can be the name of your officially registered company. THIS IS NOT A MADE UP NAME!

Next, you’ll enter your display name. This is where you’ll enter the name that will be known to your customers. This is the name that you will make up. This doesn’t have to be official or registered in any way. Continue on entering your address and telephone number.

You will then be required to enter your credit card information. This will be held on file to pay your shipping fees  in the case you haven’t sold enough product to cover them. Click save & continue.

Next, you will be required to verify your identity. Choose whether you would rather have a phone call or a text message. To me, the text message is easier. Enter your phone number and click “Call Me Now” or “Text Me Now.” You will receive a code via the method you chose that you will enter in the spot provided.

After you enter the PIN you were provided the screen will appear as below confirming you have completed the step. Click continue.

You will then be taken to a screen with a summary of the information you entered. This is all you need to do. You may now sell as many products as you want.

What? You want to get paid? Oh, well for that, you’ll have to keep reading.

In order to actually get paid, you will have to work out the legalities. First, you will have to let Amazon know how they need to report your income to Big Brother. Click on the Start button next to “Tax Identity Information”.

Amazon provides you a simple interview wizard to make inputting your tax information easier. Click the button to launch the wizard.

To start off the interview, you’ll need to let Amazon know if you are a “U.S. person,” whatever that means. A short definition of a “U.S. person” is included at the bottom of the page. If you are a “U.S. person,” click yes and then click continue. If you are a “U.S. wildebeest,” maybe you should reconsider selling on Amazon.

The next screen will ask what kind of business you are. If you don’t have any kind of legal entity set up, you are an Individual/sole proprietor. If you do have a legal entity, choose the appropriate selection from the list.

Continue on entering the address of your business. If you are an individual, you may use your home address.

At the bottom of the form, you will choose whether you will be using your own Social Security Number or if you will be using your business’s tax ID number. Once that is entered, click continue.

Next is a summary of the information you have provided so far. Verify the info and click continue.

On the next page, you will consent to an electronic 1099 form and electronic signature. Click submit.

On the next page, you will be asked for your electronic signature. Check boxes 1-4, type your name in box 5, and enter your email into box 6. Click submit.

On the next page, it will show your electronic signature at the bottom. Click “Exit interview” to complete the process.

The next page simply confirms that you have completed your tax information. Click continue.

Next will be another summary page verifying the steps you have completed so far. Click continue.

Next you will be taken to sort of a survey to tell Amazon your intentions with your business. Check all that apply. Check more than applies right now. You never know where your business will take you.

Next you will be asked what categories you intend to sell in. Check them all. Click save and continue.

Now that Amazon has legal permission to pay you, you will have to give them a way to. On the next page, find the button that looks like this. Click start.

Next to “”, click “Add.”

Here is the page that you will need to fill out all of your bank account information so that Amazon will be able to send you direct deposits. Fill out spots 1-5 as described. Click submit.

After that, you will be taken to the main Amazon Seller Central page. You have completed everything you need to do to for your new seller account.

Now that you have an account set up, you’ll be able to use the Amazon seller app to scout for inventory. I’ve created a tutorial on how to read a product page on the Amazon App to help you in your sourcing journey!
